A correctly prescribed gemstone worn incorrectly produces suboptimal results. This is the part that most online gemstone guides — including the ones sold by the dealers themselves — underemphasise or skip entirely.
The Vedic gemstone system is not just about the stone. It is about the stone as a planetary receptor — and like any receptor, the conditions under which it is set up matter. The day of wearing, the time, the metal setting, the finger, the mantra ritual, and the continuous wear protocol all affect how effectively the stone transmits the planetary frequency it is prescribed to carry.
The Core Wearing Rules by Planet
Sun — Ruby (Manik)
- Day and time: Sunday, within 1 hour of sunrise
- Metal: Gold (classical) or Panchdhatu (five-metal alloy)
- Finger: Ring finger, right hand
- Mantra: “Om Hraam Hreem Hroum Sah Suryaya Namah” × 108
- Before wearing: Wash in raw milk or clean water, then Ganga jal or plain water
Moon — Pearl (Moti)
- Day and time: Monday, during moonrise or early morning
- Metal: Silver
- Finger: Little finger, right hand
- Mantra: “Om Shraam Shreem Shroum Sah Chandramase Namah” × 108
- Before wearing: Wash in milk, then water. Never expose to harsh chemicals — remove before swimming
Mars — Red Coral (Moonga)
- Day and time: Tuesday, within 2 hours of sunrise
- Metal: Gold or copper (Mars’s metals)
- Finger: Ring finger, right hand
- Mantra: “Om Kraam Kreem Kroum Sah Bhaumaya Namah” × 108
- Note: Natural coral is porous — do not use ultrasonic cleaning
Mercury — Emerald (Panna)

- Metal: Gold or silver
- Finger: Little finger, right hand
- Mantra: “Om Braam Breem Broum Sah Budhaya Namah” × 108

Rahu — Hessonite (Gomed)
- Day and time: Saturday or Wednesday
- Metal: Silver or Panchdhatu (eight-metal alloy for Rahu)
- Finger: Middle finger, right hand

Why the Day Matters
Planetary hours and days are not arbitrary. Each day is governed by a planet — Sunday by the Sun, Monday by the Moon, Tuesday by Mars, Wednesday by Mercury, Thursday by Jupiter, Friday by Venus, Saturday by Saturn. The planetary energy is most accessible and most concentrated at the day’s most significant planetary hour, particularly sunrise and the first hours of the planetary day.
Wearing a gemstone on its associated day and in the first planetary hour aligns the initiation of the stone’s work with the planetary cycle’s natural peak. Think of it as timing a seed planting to the growing season — the planting can happen at other times, but germination is optimised at the right moment.
The Mantra Is Not Optional
The 108-count mantra recitation before wearing is the activation ritual — what classical texts call abhimantrita (energising with intention and sound). Mantras in the Vedic system are not affirmations. They are precisely calibrated sound frequencies — each syllable is a specific vibration, and 108 repetitions creates a resonance field in the stone’s crystalline structure that initiates its planetary work.
Wearing a prescribed stone without the mantra ritual is like switching on a device without completing the setup. The hardware is present. The activation is missing.
For people who are not comfortable with Sanskrit mantra, a simpler protocol: hold the stone in your dominant hand for 5-10 minutes on the correct day, with focused intention on the planet and its qualities, before wearing. This is not the classical standard but is better than no activation.
Continuous Wear Requirement
Vedic gemstones work through sustained planetary contact. Wearing a stone for special occasions does not produce remedial results — the tradition requires continuous wear (day and night, removing only for bathing if necessary, though many traditions permit wearing during bathing too). The planetary frequency integration requires sustained skin contact over weeks and months.
The minimum trial period for assessing whether a stone is producing results: 3 months of continuous wear. Most practitioners report that benefits begin to manifest within 3-6 weeks for well-placed stones in active dasha periods, and 3-6 months for general placement support.
When to Remove a Gemstone
Remove gemstones during: attending cremation or places associated with death, during eclipse periods (grahanam), during menstruation for some traditions (consult your Jyotishi), when entering a hospital for surgery or procedure.
Replace a gemstone if it: cracks or chips (considered inauspicious — the stone has absorbed a karmic event), loses its lustre significantly, or was recommended for a specific dasha period that has now ended (Cat’s Eye for Ketu Mahadasha, for example, may not be needed after the Ketu period completes).
The Right Place to Buy
Certified dealers with GIA or IGI certification for precious stones. Avoid: online marketplaces without certification, street dealers offering “special deals” on Blue Sapphire or Ruby, dealers who cannot provide the country of origin and treatment history.
