Muhurta: The Science of Choosing the Right Moment
Every action you take gains or loses probability based on when it is initiated. Muhurta is Vedic astrology’s system for identifying when planetary conditions are most supportive for specific types of action.
The Five Elements of a Muhurta Assessment
1. Tithi (Lunar Day)
Most auspicious Tithis: 2nd (Dwitiya), 3rd (Tritiya), 5th (Panchami), 7th (Saptami), 10th (Dashami), 11th (Ekadashi), 13th (Trayodashi)
Tithis to avoid: 4th (Chaturthi), 8th (Ashtami), 9th (Navami) — Rikta Tithis. Also Amavasya for commercial ventures.
2. Vara (Day of the Week)

Fixed (Sthira) Nakshatras — best for permanent undertakings: Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada.
Gentle (Mridu) Nakshatras — best for auspicious ceremonies: Mrigashira, Revati, Chitra, Anuradha.
Pushya Nakshatra is traditionally the most auspicious of all 27 Nakshatras for initiating important ventures. Sarva karyeshu pushyah — “for all works, Pushya.”
4. Yoga
Avoid: Vaidhriti (27th) and Vyatipata (17th) — the two most inauspicious Yogas.
Best: Siddha (21st), Sadhya (22nd), Shubha (23rd), Sukla (24th), Brahma (25th).
5. Karana (Half-Lunar Day)
Avoid initiating important matters during Vishti Karana (Bhadra) — occurs twice per lunar month.
Special Considerations by Action Type
Marriage Muhurta: Moon in Sthira or Mridu Nakshatra. Venus and Jupiter not combust. Rahu and Ketu not in the 7th or Lagna of the Muhurta chart. Preferred months: Uttarayana.
Business Launch Muhurta: Wednesday or Thursday, Pushya or Rohini Nakshatra if possible. Moon waxing (Shukla Paksha). 10th house of Muhurta chart well-occupied.
Property Purchase Muhurta: Fixed Nakshatra strongly preferred. 4th house of Muhurta chart strong.
Guru Pushya Yoga: The Most Auspicious Combination
When Pushya Nakshatra falls on a Thursday (Jupiter’s day), the combination is Guru Pushya Yoga — one of the most auspicious Muhurta combinations in the classical system. Use this window for business launches, property purchases, and major financial actions.
